Plans for Krönbacken

The renovated façade of Michaelisstraße is a testament to medieval splendor. But the forecourt of Krönbacken could in the future be the subject of many more tasks: the head of cultural affairs Tobias Knoblich (non-party) wishes that the building becomes a permanent use, but seasonal.

The exhibition on sustainable development "ZNE – Recommended for Imitation" should be a start. "The house is suitable for projects of exceptional quality, which deserve to be presented in the atmosphere and which also have the power to deal with architecture and interior design. remarkable, "said Mr Knoblich.

He has already selected the show for next year. "Two German Architectures from 1949 to 1989" will then be on display – the first fully German presentation of the most important buildings, architects as well as the artistic and landscape design related to the construction, the east and the west. ;Where is. "It's an honorable traveling exhibit with models from the Institute of Foreign Cultural Relations, an unheard-of experience in the region," said Mr. Knoblich. "He compares Eastern and Western architecture without ideology nor divide it into a wrong and correct architecture." The catalog of the exhibition will also be republished and developed to include an insert for Erfurt.

The house has its roots in the 13th century and has received its current form in the following centuries. The alluring facade conceals the fact that until a few weeks ago, the house was still a "hollow bird" with an unsafe statics. The exhibition on sustainability was an opportunity and the Ministry of Environment provided the project tools to change this state.

Implementing it in a few weeks was a challenge, says Knoblich. "The employees in the offices concerned have their hands on their heads," he said. In the end, everyone would have worked hard. Thomas Schmidt's exhibition architecture and the developed fire protection concept would have transformed the house so that it can be used at least seasonally. Since there is no heating means seasonal "in summer".

Knoblich pointed out that this was initially aimed at "prudent use". The winding corridors, the many stairs and the partially flat doors set the limits of use. Accessibility is not available, the number of visitors is limited.

"We also explain with use that we need more," says Knoblich. "It can not stay like this." For example, Knoblich sees in the connection with the Waidspeicher Gallery in the back building a meaning. The use of the local elevator could make the historic home less accessible.

However, the Krönbacken do not expressly represent an extension of the gallery. The exhibitions in the front building are not focused on the art, as shown in the architectural exhibition planned for 2020.

Even as cultural director, Knoblich had campaigned to use the future of Krönbacken as a "cultural portal". Visitors should have an overview, especially of historical museums and innovative themes accessible through digital media. The project did not result in the necessary settlement in the dispute over the history museums and was also heavily criticized.

In a concept of museum development, which Knoblich wishes to promote externally, the idea could be re-examined. "Audience leadership is part of the concept," he confirms. The Krönbacken should be seen from this angle – and if, then at best with an opening of the courtyard on the street Allerheiligenstraße.
