The swisttaler architect Nikolaus Bienefeld participates in the Bonn Art and Design Society. You can see "Space, Color, Image and Furniture" until October 22nd.

This beautifully proportioned room at the end of the steep straight staircase of the Hochstadenring 22 has already undergone several transformations. It was a simple shell, a vessel for art, became an actor himself, modified several times by original interventions and thus honoring the Institute of Art and Design (gkg).
The architect of Swisttaler, Nikolaus Bienefeld, delivers in the current show "Space, color, image and furniture" a particularly successful intervention. By recovering more as an architect of the building and by analyzing the space found with means of painting partially deconstructed and commented on in an artistic way. The gray concrete-colored linoleum floor and the wide gray plinths extend on the walls as fugitive, intentionally opaque paints, laminated with natural pigments – slate gray earth. In return, the partition wall in the middle of the room is extended on the floor in the form of a white stripe.
The prefabricated painting of the hardware store is not a problem for him
On the walls hang paintings such as the "Red English / Burnt Siena" or the white reliefs of the series "Marble Flour". The designation of the title corresponds to the materials used. Value is important to Bienefeld, ready-made hardware painting is not a problem for him, he says. The surfaces are a little rough, the colors are velvety, full-bodied and full. Hang on the wall images with very bright and vibrant colors – they document a wall drawing in Münster in colored glass.
The exhibition impressively shows how Bienefeld manages the space, how it takes the walls of their closed and compact form and, so to speak, activates them. As an architect, he realized several projects of room and wall design, and also designed the furniture in function. Some stools and bedside tables are visible in the gkg: geometric furniture very simple and clear without any frills. Bienefeld recommends sitting down. And here we see the vision with different eyes. "This justifies the furniture of a painting exhibition," says Bienefeld brilliantly.
The simple shape of the stools and the lapidary paint go well together. The brick houses built by Bienefeld and reloaded inside with murals are just as simple, with captivating formal clarity, material solidity and honesty. Unfortunately, the gkg does not show anything. It lacks an overview of the furniture art of the architect. This is a real lack of success, organized by Andreas Denk.
The visitor of the exhibition must hope for an excursion into the buildings and spaces of Bienefeld in order to broaden his horizons. The date will be announced. Until then, one should take a look at Bienefeld's home page, which documents in particular the architecture and design of the walls.
"Architecture is for me a painting and vice versa," explains Bienefeld and explains these close relationships based on his Vita: In Düsseldorf, he studied painting and sculpture at Jan Dibbets. When his father, the architect Heinz Bienefeld, died suddenly, his son Nikolaus had to take over the architecture office in 1997.
He made his way into the business. In a questionnaire from TH Cologne, where he was appointed professor in 2014, he reveals: "Architecture design inspires me, as it decisively shapes all areas of life." The possibilities of answering questions in detail are multiple, even infinite. "
