Architects Roger Boltshauser, Mike Guyer and Peter Märkli met with Jürg Zumtobel, developer Markus Mettler and lighting designer Thomas Mika at a round table at the Careum Auditorium in Zurich. Guest was the company Reflexion.

Reflexion AG is one of the leading providers of design and lighting planning in this country. Some of the most famous Swiss architects have already worked with the company. The reflection repertoire also includes the development of special lights. Thus, on the occasion of a corporate event held on September 5, 2019 at the Careum Auditorium in Zurich, they questioned their importance for architecture. Do designers really need them? And when do you use special lights? How does design cooperation work? Architects Roger Boltshauser, Mike Guyer and Peter Märkli addressed these issues with Jürg Zumtobel, developer Markus Mettler and think-tank founder Thomas Mika on an upscale and male podium. After all, Peter Märkli, dressed in an elegant coat and All Stars sports shoes, has created a splash of color.

symbiosis

Mika first of all favored a close collaboration between architects and lighting planners. It is only together that expensive solutions and expensive and tedious development of a special lighting against the builders can be discussed and applied. Finally, for lighting, only a small fraction of the budget is generally estimated. Similarly, colleague Jürg Zumtobel commented. Today, the price and technical performance remain too important, said the Austrian. On the other hand, users and their perception often receive too little attention.

Roger Boltshauser already has very close contact with lighting planners such as Mika. In the case of the development of the Zurich area of Hardturm, for example, his office had already intensely thought through the preparation of the competition application, he said. Special solutions such as illuminated glass blocks have been developed together. This approach should have helped to overcome the strong competition.

design objects

Mike Guyer was a bit sober and friendly. Although Gigon Guyer has successfully used special luminaires in projects such as Andreasturm's in Oerlikon (2018), he is nevertheless not "proud of the result". Such objects are often "design-sensitive", sometimes taken in objectivity and therefore interchangeable and therefore less durable. As confirmed by Markus Mettler of Halter AG, lighting is in his eyes one of the most cost-effective ways of positioning a product (ie a building), which makes it undeniable. For him, the luminaires are design objects perfectly adapted to rapidly increase the value of buildings.

The basics of the first

But let's go back to Peter Märkli; For him, the choice and design of special lamps is an important but subordinate chapter. After all, it is important that architects develop an "idea of light", which deals with perception and emotion. It was also important to think about the correct positioning of the light sources in the room. It is only later that it makes sense to look after development and lighting design. Boltshauser was particularly in favor of this because he asked that the lighting of rooms in architectural studies be treated in more detail. Märkli, visibly in a good mood, finally caused the biggest laughter of the evening when he said that the lights in his office were bad, but that all the more motivates his employees to find solutions for the future. Particularly efficient lighting during their design. In addition, the café and the shop are decisive in the workplace, not the lights.
