HafenCity – Now the Speicherstadt has another monument,
A 384-page book by Ralf Lange on the beginnings, demolition, construction and attraction of millions of tourists a year!
The book "Hamburg Speicherstadt – History, Architecture, World Heritage" (Dölling and Galitz Verlag, 39.90 euros) is, with 440 historical photos, documents, architectural drawings and maps, the most comprehensive work on the Hamburg's world-famous brick treasure, since 2016 to UNESCO's World Heritage.
The Nazi World Heritage is also highlighted here. A "perfectly organized control system with a bloated bureaucracy" hindered trade, which had not yet recovered from the global economic crisis: in 1929, 27 million tons had been exchanged on the Elbe before the outbreak of the crisis; in 1935, there were only 19.5 million tons.
The Hamburger Hafen und Lagerhaus-AG, who is today the owner of 22 Speicherstadt blocks with 330,000 square meters of warehouses, bears his name (HHLA, predecessor of the 1928 state-owned company). ), only since 1939. A bronze sign at the entrance of the new name HHLA headquarters, while the old HFLG inscription is framed by two sculptures of lions in the coat of arms of the facade. Which old blocks have been preserved, displays a directory with the current photos at the end of the illustrated book.
The author, publisher Speicherstadtmuseum and Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg attach great importance to exact location, for example. Bridge figures, facade details – the work is therefore also a thick guide of Speicherstadt with a lot of port history.
And in these books, you have even more north under the cover of the book.
