Initiative klima: aktiv – The green feeling of living at home

Quality of the infrastructure, high energy efficiency, use of renewable energy sources, use of ecological building materials and thermal comfort: these are the five basic criteria that the Austrian initiative for protection Climate Klima: aktiv of the Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism defines the ecological construction and habitat. In addition, the initiative will accelerate the output of oil and gas heating.

Five basic criteria for "green" buildings

But what exactly do these five basic criteria contain? Even the location of a building is crucial for the green theme. Because if there are many local suppliers easily accessible on foot, it's a benefit to the environment. These factors are summarized under "Quality of Infrastructure".

The topics "High Energy Efficiency" and "Use of Renewable Energy Sources" include questions related to heat demand and heat input. Energy demand and the share of greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants should be as low as possible. Climate: Active buildings have, for example, a maximum maximum value for CO 2 emissions which, depending on the type of building, must not exceed certain limits.

In addition, the choice of building materials and constructions has an influence on whether a building is environmentally friendly. The criterion "Use of green building materials" stipulates that climate-damaging building materials are not allowed in climatically active buildings. For example, building materials containing PVC should be avoided. PVC is classified in the European Union as a carcinogenic vinyl chloride. This applies especially to floor and wall coverings.

The point "thermal comfort" concerns finally the question of the insulation of walls and windows. Because the well insulated apartments guarantee that the least possible heat is lost in winter and that it stays pleasantly cool in the living room in the summer.

The heat of a building depends on many factors. These factors include the area, orientation and quality of the windows, various shading measures, the level of hull insulation, the storage masses or the respective ventilation behavior. The initiative also has its own system for assessing the sustainability of buildings, including energy efficiency, climate protection and resource use. This rating system, which totals 1,000 points in four categories, aims to provide concrete assistance to those wishing to build an ecological building.

Four categories of evaluation

The four categories of assessment are planning and execution, energy and supply, building materials and construction, as well as the quality of indoor and outdoor air. comfort. Depending on the score obtained, the buildings are then divided into three levels of quality.

Buildings that meet all criteria must receive the klima quality level: active bronze. Buildings that reach at least 750 points are rewarded by the climate: active money index. Buildings that earn at least 900 points receive the klima prize: aktiv Gold. The klima: aktiv construction standard is available for residential buildings, office buildings and other service buildings for new construction and renovation.

Specially conditioned buildings are rewarded and presented each month as "object of the month". Examples are the "House of Knowledge" in St. Pölten, the "Three Sisters" of the Seestadt in Vienna-Aspern, the "Haus am Park" Helmut-Zilk Park in Vienna or the Passive House in Vienna, recently named for the Austrian State Prize. St. Anton on the iron road.
